Note:This thesis defends Adorno's critical theory of society against the charge of pessimism. Its two aims are to portray the theory's hope and to present its model for progressive social change. I argue that Adorno's pessimistic assertions concerning the closed society are not to be taken literally but understood as rhetorical devices which provoke reflection. Neither is his "negative utopia” to be read as pure criticism. It is a new vision of reconciliation that preserves the individual from subsumption under the universal, and it is this focus on the individual which the term "negative" stresses.
