Based on recent findings regarding the neural correlates of dreaming, this study tested the Freudian hypothesis that dreams protect sleep. In order to do this, sleep architecture in patients who had experienced dream loss as a result of thrombotic stroke in the region of the posterior cerebral arteries was compared with that of patients with the same pathology who had not experienced dream loss.
