The T-box gene family has achieved great prominence in the field of developmental biology because its members have been demonstrated to play important roles in embryonic development and mutations within several T-box genes are associated with a number of human congenital diseases. Several lines of evidence have also implicated members of the T-box gene family in cell cycle regulation and in cancer.
