This edited volume builds on a special issue of the Journal of Intervention and Statebuilding edited by me in 2010, but contains many more articles/authors than the original collection. It evolves around the conceptual tension between the concepts of statebuilding versus state-formation (all authors refer to this conceptual idea in their chapters) and uses sociological and anthropological approaches to study the dynamics of states under intervention.
