The removal of antibiotic growth-promoters has led to an increased interest in alternative means of manipulating rumen fermentation. In this review we consider one of the possible alternatives: natural plant products including essential oils, saponins and related compounds. Essential oils have been used by man for many years. Their main effects in the rumen involve reduction of protein and starch degradation and an inhibition of amino acid degradation, due to selective action on certain rumen microorganisms, specifically some bacteria.
