A linked gas chromatography Fourier transform infrared mass spectrometer (GC/FTIR/MS) system was developed for the purpose of identifying the components of mixtures by the use of the complementary information available from infrared and mass spectra. Individually, a mass spectrum or an infrared spectrum of a compound can provide much information about the compound\u27s identity, yet there exist many cases where an infrared or mass spectrum does not provide enough information to unambiguously identify the compound.
