Graduation date: 1987This dissertation introduces a new idea for frequency\ud domain deconvolution of speech signals. The idea is to\ud approximate a unit sample by a Gaussian pulse. The\ud deconvolution is performed by designing a glottal inverse\ud filter that will estimate the excitation of the vocal tract.\ud Then, the excitation will be used to determine the pitch\ud period of speech. This approximation is expected to result\ud in filters that do not have large coefficients and that are\ud capable of reliably estimating the excitation of the vocal\ud tract
