Part one introduces the protagonist, Allen, as well as the catalyst for the story, an end-of-world prediction from a dying scientist. The warning is picked up any discussed in the public sphere of contemporary media, with intercutting sections of part one written as news broadcasts. The heart of the story, however, rests in the personal. Allen, feeling that his time is running short, his love and loyalties split between his wife and mistress, confronts the idea that the decisions we make will always be held up to the decisions we didn't.
