Las mil y una noches contiene mucho del saber y las prácticas de la vida diaria del Islam medieval. El cuento de Abu l-Hasan con Abu Ya'far el leproso es muy rico en contenidos místicos, que este artículo estudia en detalle. Asimismo ubica el sufismo, la experiencia del acercamiento y conocimiento personal de Dios, en su contexto histórico.
