The literature of Willa Cather has long been praised for its rich and evocative description of place. Her raw material was drawn primarily from personal experiences in late nineteenth- century Webster County, Nebraska, during the period of initial settlement, and renewed by frequent visits home the first decades of this century. The Pavelka farmstead was one of the important places in her life; it was used as the setting for Book V of My Antonia and for Neighbour Rosicky, a later short story.
