Land use decisions that affect wetlands and wetland functions are influenced by a variety of factors, some of which arise from policies that directly or indirectly provide incentives for wetland drainage or conservation. Direct efforts to provide incentives for wetland conservation must be augmented by complementary policy reforms. This paper reviews the policy instruments that have the potential to influence land use on the Canadian Prairies, and suggests some research questions that should be addressed to promote reforms that would conserve wetlands
