The issue of achieving self-government has long been a concern of many Aboriginal people in Canada. Indian, Metis, and Inuit people were formally recognized in the Canadian constitution in 1982, when s. 35 of the Constitution Act, 1982 proclaimed that the existing aboriginal and treaty rights of the aboriginal people of Canada are hereby recognized and affirmed.
