Skeletal muscles display specific features (size, shape, orientation, attachment site,number of nuclei), which are tightly controlled by the combinatorial expression of identity factors. Currently, process by which identity genes determine muscle characteristics is not fully understood. Uncovering how identity factors are interconnected and how they control network of genes specifying muscle cell fate remains a major challenge.
