In 1956, the freshly elected president, Juscelino Kubitschek, took the decision to move the nation's capital from Rio de Janeiro to the center of the country. Constructed in record a little over 3 years, Brasilia was born as an icon of modernist architecture in the heart of the sterile Brazilian "cerrado". This capital represented a symbol of the movement to modernize, to integrate and to re-center the country.
