In an interdisciplinary project consortium, we developed and evaluated an immersive multi-user 3D virtual reality simulation environment for the training of complex emergency scenarios in paramedical education. Focus of the paper is the presentation and discussion of the instructional design, the evaluation methodology and results of the first prototype. We present technology features insofar as it seems necessary for the understanding of the instructional and evaluation design. Based on an evaluation study with 24 paramedic students in two paramedic training institutions, the results indicate improvements regarding usability, expansion of the virtual environment and further steps for a sustainable implementation in educational practice
