Job stress in physical education teachers: A qualitative study

El objetivo del presente estudio fue analizar la percepción que tiene el profesorado de Educación Física (en adelante EF) sobre los posibles desencadenantes de estrés laboral en su vida profesional. El estudio siguió un diseño cualitativo mediante entrevistas semiestructuradas con un proceso de pilotaje previo. Los participantes fueron 12 profesores de EF seleccionados incidentalmente mediante criterios de inclusión por sexo (mujeres y hombres), etapa (primaria y secundaria) y experiencia profesional (entre tres y 30 años). Para llevar a cabo el análisis de contenido de las entrevistas se creó un sistema de 29 categorías organizadas en tres dimensiones en virtud del origen de los estresores: administración educativa, centro escolar y aula de clase. Todas las entrevistas fueron analizadas por al menos dos investigadores. El estudio fue aprobado por el comité de ética de la universidad a la que pertene el equipo investigador. Los resultados detallan y diferencian cuatro tipos de estresores en función de su prevalencia: alta, media, baja y ninguna. Igualmente, los estresores son discutidos y ejemplificados mediante testimonios que ayudan a comprender la percepción de los docentes de EF a propósito de su estrés laboral. Se concluye que el contexto aula de clase es el que genera más desencadenantes de estrés. Estos hallazgos apuntan a que el profesorado de EF está expuesto a estresores laborales específicos de su desempeño profesionalThe aim of this study was to analyze the perception of Physical Education (here in after PE) teachers about potential triggers of job stress in their professional life. The study was based upon a qualitative design carried out through semi-structured interviews subject to a prior piloting process. 12 PE teachers, who were incidentally selected based on an inclusion criteria by gender (women and men), stage (primary and secondary) and work experience (three to 30 years), participated in the present study. To carry out the content analysis of the interviews, a 29-categorysystem was created, organized in three dimensions divided by source of the stressors: educational administration, school center and classroom. All interviews were analyzed by at least two investigators. The study was approved by the ethics committee of the research team’s university. The results detail and differentiate four types of stressors according to their prevalence: high, medium, low and none. These findings are discussed and exemplified through testimonies that help understand the perception of physical education teachers about their job stress. Likewise, it is concluded that the classroom context is the one that generates the most stress triggers.
