This thesis deals with the protection of zirconium (Zr) nuclear fuel cladding against corrosion and high-temperature oxidation in water-cooled nuclear reactors (LWR) with coatings of polycrystalline diamond (PCD) or mixed nitride of chromium, aluminium and silicon (CrAlSiN). It has been shown that Zr alloy surfaces can be effectively protected against oxidation at accidental and operating temperatures in the LWR by coating the zirconium surface with a PCD or CrAlSiN layer. Each coating works in a specific way and for a particular purpose. The PCD (300-700 nm) layer consists of two different carbon phases: diamond and sp2 carbon and effectively reduces Zr corrosion at operating temperature (about 40%).
