The Illinois Department of Transportation (IDOT) had an immediate need to evaluate the performance characteristics of new asphalt mixtures. The new mixtures included warm mix asphalt (WMA), stone-matrix asphalt (SMA) with recycled asphalt shingles (RAS), and asphalt mixtures containing alternate friction aggregates (diabase, quartzite, and granite).
