This volume provides a concise account of pre-classical Israelite prophecy. It opens with a review of profecy among Israel's neighbors and a consideration of the possible influence of this phenomenon on Israel's own prophecy. There follows a discussion of the etymology and semantic evolution of the term “nābîʾ“, and then a summary presentation of the pre-classical prophetic figures. The final chapter addresses four themes: 1) Israelite prophecy in relation to that of its neighbors; 2) Israel's adaptation / elimination of Ancient Near East prophetic elements; 3) the Hebrew Bible's understanding of prophecy; 4) pre-classical contribution to classical prophecy
