The book intends to account for the increasing interest that the scientific community shows towards the epistemological aspects of psychology. Thus, it presents a systematic analysis of the main theoretical paradigms in psychology as to their epistemological foundations. The final chapter, which has been completely revised in the 2011 edition of the book, critically investigates the reductive image of the human being that is often derived from neuroscientific inquiry. The chapter aims to show that such an image is supported not by empirical evidence alone, but by a naturalistic philosophical interpretation of it, and that the mind-body nexus can be more plausibly reconceived of within the framework of emergentist dualism
