La reconstrucción de la identidad en Guatemala: un reto del futuro

The article gives an interpretation of the history of the Guatemalan nation and of the history of Guatemalan literature through the ethnic struggle between a ruling class of European descent, and an oppressed class of native origin. It shows how the building of the State in Guatemala has failed because there are 4 ethnic groups: Ladino, Mayan, Garifuna and Xinca. It documents how the war of the last part of the XX century resulted in the awareness of the multiethnic nature of the nation and the need for this nation to build a dialogue between ethnic groups.El artículo reelabora una historia de la nación guatemalteca y, con ella, una historia de la literatura guatemalteca a través de la confrontación étnica entre una clase dirigente de orígenes europeas y una clase oprimida de origen autóctono. Hace ver cómo la construcción del estado en Guatemala no se ha logrado precisamente porque hay al menos 4 etnias: ladina, maya, garifuna y xinca. Constata como la guerra de la última mitad del s. XX tuvo como consecuencia la conciencia de la naturaleza multietnica de la nación y la necesidad de construir tal nación a través de un diálogo entre etnias
