Fostering Blended Learning: Successful Partnerships and Faculty Development for Institutional Change

Instruction Matters: Purdue Academic Course Transformation (IMPACT ) is a successful campus-wide course redesign and faculty development program at Purdue University. This session shows how blended course redesign is a potential catalyst for institutional change and demonstrates its effects on learning gains, including critical thinking, problem solving, and information literacy. The discussion focuses on the nuts and bolts of the innovative staff development and course redesign integral to IMPACT. Also covered are the research-based redesign curriculum and strategies; the financial and personnel support offered to faculty fellows; and the many successful institutional partnerships that were necessary for IMPACT’s success. The presentation reveals how technologies are used as a tool/strategy in the course redesign program to enhance student learning and engagement. The assessment of course level student learning outcomes are a foundational goal of the faculty development program. Target audience for this session includes faculty, faculty developers, instructional designers/developers, librarians and academic administrators. Learning outcomes are: how to launch an effective course redesign, how to identify institutional partners, how to create a successful faculty development program to support blended course redesign, how to support faculty innovations, and how to use blended course redesign as a catalyst for campus-wide and institutional change
