Transcript of Hermann Kesten's speech on Heinrich Heine and Joseph Roth, given on March 22, 1973, at the Carnegie Endowment International Center for the Leo Baeck Institute. The manuscript is accompanied by a letter from Kesten to the Leo Baeck Institute, which includes his signature.Irmgard FoergHermann Kesten was born in 1900 in Podwoloczyska (Galicia). From 1927 to 1933 he was the literary director of the Kiepenheuer-Verlag in Berlin. In 1933, he left Germany and immigrated to Amsterdam via Paris, Brussles and Nice. In Amsterdam he was the director of the emigree publishing house Allert de Lange. He immigrated to New York in 1940. From 1972 to 1976 he was the president of the PEN.
