Hanna Spitzer Collection. 1910-1973 Bulk dates: 1916-1948

The collection holds correspondence of Hanna Spitzer. Included are documents pertaining to her forced emigration from Vienna in 1938 as well as vital records and a photograph. There also is Edith Neumann’s list of ‘Spitzer pictures’ as of 1935.Hanna (Hansi) Spitzer was born on September 11, 1897 in Vienna, Austria. She was the daughter of the lawyer and art collector Alfred Spitzer and his wife Hermine. Hanna’s younger sister was Edith Neumann, née Spitzer, a microbiologist who was married to the Congregationalist pastor Frederick Neumann. Hanna was forced to emigrate from Vienna in 1938, where she had been employed as a tutor.
