Digital recordingJune 19, 2012Kurt Malkischer was born on June 20, 1931 in Vienna, Austria. He grew up as an only child in a struggling middle-class family in Neubau, Vienna’s 7th District. After “Anschluss”, he was expelled from school and his parents’ hat business lost all customers. His father tried to get visas to the U.S., Australia, South America, South Africa but was denied entry to any of these places. At last, the family got a visa to Shanghai, China and left Vienna on January 15, 1939. They stayed in Shanghai till December 1948, when they left for Israel. There, Kurt Malkischer joined the Israeli Navy. He immigrated to the US in April 1951 and joined the U. S. Army.Austrian Heritage Collectio
