Light Blind

Details: Light Blind was commissioned by the Brooklyn Fire Proof Gallery, Brooklyn, New York, and produced in collaboration with Glasgow-based video artist T.S. Beall. This work was primarily realised during a two-week residency programme funded by an Arts Council of England Grant for Individuals at Brooklyn Fire Proof Gallery. Portfolio: Press release of Light Blind. Untitled Horses, commissioned by Castlefield Gallery, Manchester, produced in collaboration with artist T.S. Beall, funded by the Arts Council of England, 2006, on CD-R and DVD with programme. Context: The work consists of video sequences projected on to two screens suspended in the centre of the gallery space, with amplified sound played through four speakers placed in relation to the four corners of the screens. The spatialisation of sound through the use of multi-channel audio and speaker placement in relation to the movement of the image across the multi-screen setup is the main focus of the work. The research questions addressed in the work are: How can new music be placed in contexts other than that of the concert hall? How is its reception different when it is placed in these new contexts? Is the act of composition different when composing for a space other than that of the concert hall? As well as these aesthetic questions, practical research into the means of synchronising multiple channels of video and audio was needed. The latter was achieved through customised presentation equipment and the use of Free Open Source Software (FOSS) to run the video and audio in precise synchronisation. Since developing this system, a subsequent work (Untitled Horses), with larger numbers of video and audio channels, has been created.
