The overall process of low-noise engine design is outlined. Computational techniques for the analysis of engine noise are considered: the finite element method for the vibratory analysis of the engine structure, the boundary element method for the acoustic analysis of the bare engine and the boundary and shell element method for the prediction of the effect of noise shields. Results from the application of the techniques to an engine-like structure or to test problems are given
