Las especies nativas que sobreviven en suelos contaminados con metales (metalofitas y pseudometalofitas) han desarrollado unos mecanismos fisiológicos especiales para tolerar la presencia de metales: (i) la exclusión que impide la entrada de metales en la raíz y/o su transporte a la parte aérea de la planta, (ii) la acumulación en la parte aérea mediante su inmovilización o compartimentación en las vacuolas. Debido a que viven en zonas muy limitadas y pueden ser afectadas directamente por las actividades mineras su conservación debería ser prioritaria, no sólo por la pérdida de una biodiversidad tan especial sino por su posible utilización en fitotecnologías ambientales de revegetación, fitoestabilización y fitoextracción de entornos ...
