Herpes simplex virus type 2 (HSV-2) is a sexually transmitted pathogen that infects the human genital tract mucosa and is the most common cause of genital ulcer disease in humans. The infection exhibits a broad clinical spectrum, ranging from severe recurrent episodes of genital herpes to being completely asymptomatic.
