MOTIF MAHASISWA MENGGUNAKAN MEDIA SOSIAL FACEBOOK DAN INSTAGRAM (Studi Pada Mahasiswa Angkatan 2016 Prodi Ilmu Komunikasi FISIP UMM)

One of the effects of the new media is social media as social networking sites that are widely used by the world community today. Facebook and instagram are two of the most prominent social media. This is influenced by the number of active users of both social media is quite a lot compared to other social media that makes them as social media with the most number of accounts. The use of social media can not be separated from the existence of certain motives desired by each individual or a desired goal. The motive of using social media consists of motives of information, entertainment, personal identity and integration and social interaction. Information motive is the drive to obtain information, knowledge and understanding and to seek entertainment or diversion of activities from routine or daily problems through social media. The motive of entertainment is the impulse to show emotional side, pleasant experience, or aesthetics when using social media, including affective motives and release of tension. The motive of personal identity or personal motives is the drive to strengthen credibility, confidence, stability and status through social media. The motive of integratation and social interaction is the drive to strengthen relationships with family, friends through social media. The type of this research is explanatory research with quantitative approach. The research sample is student of class of 2016 of science communication science department of Muhammadiyah University of Malang with saturated sampling technique or total sampling and data collection using questionnaire. Methods of data analysis using two different test average with independent technique-sample t test. The result of this research conclude that student motive in using social media facebook include information motive with average score 3,12, entertainment motive 3,31, personal identity motif 3,34 and motif of integration and social interaction 3,93. It's means that student motives use social media facebook dominant on the motives of integration and social interaction. Student motives using social media instagram include motive information with average score 4.12, entertainment motive of 3.73, personal identity motif of 3.56, and motives integration and social interaction of 4.01. It's means that the motives of students using social media instagram dominant on the motive information. Different test results show there is a significant difference between the average motive information and entertainment in using social media facebook and instagram on the students. But there is no significant difference or there is similarity between the average motif of personal identity as well as integration and social interaction in using social media facebook with instagram on the students
