A method of spectroscopic analysis of trace elements in solutions has been developed. The solution is converted to a mist and analyzed by proton induced x-ray flourescence in a helium atmosphere. Related problems in the development of proper droplet size and apparatus design are discussed in detail and in chronological order. A sensitivity of the order of 1 ppm can be achieved with the final apparatus. A qualitative discussion of the bremsstrahlung limiting the sensitivity is also included
