Public perception of nanotechnology for good governance: A conceptual framework for psychological and sociological approaches

Nanotechnology has evolved from tiny assembling atoms to nano-enabled application, entering the market through commercialization. Furthermore, the benefit from nanotechnology has opened a new realm to science and technology and has the potential to facilitate sustainable development. Its benefits range from environmental remediation to food security, which is vital for sustainability. However, uncertain risks of nanotechnology are also concerning from laboratories work to consumer products. Concerning both benefit and risk of nanotechnology, public perception matters in ensuring responsible development of nanotechnology. This paper aims to illustrate public perception towards nanotechnology through a conceptual framework for good governance of nanotechnology. The conceptual framework covers literature review of the public risk and benefit perceptions of nanotechnology by including factors influencing public perception towards nanotechnology. The conceptual framework consists of (1) public perception towards nanotechnology (dependent variables), (2) psychological and sociological approaches (independent variables) and intervened by (3) other variables such as media, technology development, economy status, application of nanotechnology and risk information. Public perception will be instrumental for good governance of nanotechnology, to facilitate sustainable development by considering the relevant factors in the conceptual framework, it can benefit companies, academics, and policy makers to further develop nanotechnology that suits and secures public interests
