The thesis comprises a comparative study of public attitudes in West Germany and Britain to the European Community, analysing the nature and extent of their support for European integration. The historical dimension of their entry and the background political situation is taken into account and also the possible influence of both politicians and the Media. Aspects of public opinion investigated include the acceptance of further European integration and the degree of adherence to national institutions as possibly overriding the European dimension. Consideration is also given to background social factors and socio-political attitudes, including feelings of well-being and also of liberal or traditional social values.
