The paper presents the recent developments in arc furnace design and operation. The changes discussed include the introduction of water cooled furnace sidewalls and roofs, the increased use of direct reduced iron pellets in the raw material charge and the use of solid-state devices in electrode drive systems. Of particular importance has been the implementation of digital computers and their application in the various areas of control in furnace operation is discussed in detail
