Members of the panel will question assumptions about how musicians and dancers are able to communicate and collaborate. Reassessing how music speaks to, with and through dance the panel explores examples of choreo-musicology drawn from conceptual integration networks and gesture analysis to interrogate the audio-visual dialogue in twentieth century dance works. We question how composers, choreographers, and performers communicate across the audio-visual divide. How do choreographers ‘translate’ music when choreographing a pre-existing score? How do musicians ‘translate’ dance when performing with dancers? In what way(s) can the sense and content of these art forms be transferred and shared in a collaborative work
