The building was commissioned by the Maryhill Burgh Halls Trust. It was won in an invited competition . The original building had fallen into disrepair and was in need of urgent restoration . A neighbouring baths building was being refurbished by the council so the adjacency of a community /heritage project would be complimentary in function. The original building was completed in 1878 by Duncan McNaughton and is B listed . The original stained glass from the building illustrating the trades of Maryhill were to be restored to the building.
