Music terminology in Arabic

Predmet istraživanja ove doktorske disertacije jesu muzički termini u arapskom jeziku. Cilj je da se ekscerpcijom termina iz literature na arapskom jeziku utvrde osnovne karakteristike muzičke terminologije kada je u pitanju, pre svega, leksičko pozajmljivanje, terminološka dubletnost, polisemija i/ili homonimija i stepen standardizovanosti datih termina. Arapska muzička tradicija se razvijala pod uticajem brojnih kultura i civilizacija što je uticalo i na muzičku terminologiju u arapskom jeziku, koja je u velikoj meri prošarana farsizmima, helenizmima, turcizmima... Uticaj koji je imala zapadna muzička tradicija ne treba prenaglasiti. Ipak, koncepti koji su počeli da stižu u arapski svet intenziviranjem kontakata sa Evropom početkom XIX veka – poput, na primer, notacije do tada nepoznate arapskoj oralnoj muzičkoj tradiciji – već su polovinom XX veka postali deo kurikuluma na odsecima zapadne muzike. Stoga je jedna od polaznih ideja ove disertacije podela muzičkih termina na dva segmenta – termine, kojima su označeni pojmovi autentične arapske muzičke tradicije i termine pojmova neinherentnih arapskoj muzičkoj tradiciji...The subject of this doctoral dissertation are musical terms in the Arabic language. The aim is to use music terms excerpted from Arabic literature to establish the basic characteristics of this terminology, considering, above all, lexical borrowing, terminological doubling, polysemy and/or homonymy, as well as the degree of standardization of these terms. Arab music tradition developed under the influence of various cultures and civilizations, thus its music terminology is mottled with words from Farsi, Greek, Turkish, etc. The influence of Western music should not be overemphasized. Still, concepts arriving into the Arab world through intensifying contact with Europe at the beginning of the 20th century – such as musical notation, hitherto unknown to the oral music tradition of the Arabs – became part of the curriculum in Western music departments by the middle of that century. Thus one of the starting points of this dissertation is the division of music terms into two segments: terms that designate notions indigenous to the Arabic music tradition and those not inherent to it..
