The Tai Lue of Sipsong Panna, in southern Yunnan Province, are habitually identified as the largest community of Theravada Buddhists in China. Following the end of the overt repression suffered during the Cultural Revolution and other periods of the Maoist era, the economic and political opening up of the country since the late 1970s has allowed for a strong recovery of Buddhist practice among the Lue. In spite of the decreasing number of ordinations, particularly in the last decade, monasticism continues to play an important role in the configuration of local identities. The recovery of monastic practice in Sipsong Panna is also marked by the increasing incorporation of Sipsong Panna monasticism into regional and global Buddhist networks. ...
