The use of Traditional, Complementary and Alternative Medicine (TCAM) among Stroke Patient in Kyrgyzstan

ABSTRACT Background Stroke is a main global health problem. It is a major cause of mortality, morbidity and disability in developed and developing countries. The use of TCAM among stroke patient has become more common in the last decades. However, use of TCAM among stroke patients has not been studied in Kyrgyzstan. Because of that, the aim of the present research was to find out the prevalence, characteristic and type of TCAM users among stroke patients. Method A cross-sectional study was conducted among (310) stroke patients attending inpatient and outpatient at the Neurological National Hospital in Kyrgyzstan. Data was collected by face-to-face interview with structured questionnaires, containing (41) items after getting informed consent from each patient. Descriptive analysis was done and both univariate and multivariable analysis were used to determine the TCAM use among stroke patients according to their different characteristics. Results Study found that 91% of stroke patients used traditional, complementary and alternative medicine for their symptom management 61% in stroke patients. Majority use of TCAM modalities were Natural products and Chinese medicine. Additionally, the results indicated the existence of a strong significant correlation between demographic characteristics and the use of TCAM. Conclusions The use of TCAM among stroke patients Kyrgyzstan is prevalent. TCAM users believed and trusted TCAM for its effectiveness. The diversity of TCAM modalities, their self-perception on severity of stroke and functional status determine choice of treatment all seemed to influence the use of TCAM in stroke patient. Healthcare provider must fully understand the potential risks and benefits of TCAM therapies to appropriately advise their patients.
