During 1963, 2,362 cases of encephalitis, including 184 deaths were reported to the Encephalitis Surveillance Unit (ESU). Of the total, 1,285 (53 percent) were reported by etiology. Mumps and measles accounted for over two-thirds of these. Arbovirus encephalitis cases were comparatively rare, accounting for only 76 cases. Only one outbreak, in the high plains area of Texas, was recorded during 1963.
