In alphabetic writing systems, reading a word implies to identify a sequence of visual symbols (letters) and to transcode this visuo-orthographic information into a phonological information in order to retrieve the meaning of the word. The aim of the present work is to specify the processes by which adult readers do perform this visuo- orthographic transcoding. We show, in behavioral experiments done in English and French, that identification times of visually presented words are affected by the phonological structure of these words. More specifically, our results suggest that graphemes play a crucial role in visual word recognition. We claim that these units can be considered as "minimal functional bridges" between orthographic and phonolog...
