Literature and dictatorship: building an image of repression and resistance

The military regime in Brazil brought negative and specific repercussions for the academic, cultural and social communities in the decades of 1960 and 1970. In this context, many artists and writers began to express their anguishes and ideological positions by means of social movements and literary art, in order to describe the events that marked a problematic period of political crisis. Based on the studies of Candido (2000,2006) and Borges (2010) concerning literature, history and society, on the ideas of dictatorship and repression found in Angelo (1994) and Brandão (1994) as well as the studies on Imagology of Pageaux and Machado (1988) and Pageaux (2011), this research fostered a literary and comparative analysis of two works Pessach: a travessia, written by Carlos Heitor Cony and published in 1967, before the Institutional Act Number 5 (AI5) and A festa: Romance: Contos, by Ivan Angelo, published in 1976 after AI5. In addition, the contributions of Orlandi (2007) and Foucault (2014) regarding the practice of silencing and silence using discourse, particularly the literary discourse, were important to analyze the images built from the discourse of resistance. Therefore, this study aimed to unveil the military dictatorship images present in the critical discourses of Cony and Angelo’s character-narrators, besides verifying the types of images built by the authors using their characters and narrative structures in order to describe Brazilian social and political moment through the eyes of the population and the artists of that time, especially the writers. To conclude, it was possible to verify in both novels a great presence of criticism related to the political regime with a divergence in the discursive focus of the narrators and thereby a change in the image of the regime that is presented to the readers.O regime militar no Brasil trouxe repercussões negativas e pontuais para o meio acadêmico, social e cultural nas décadas de 1960 e 1970. Neste contexto, muitos artistas e escritores passaram a expressar as suas angústias e posicionamentos ideológicos por meio de movimentos sociais e da arte literária, de modo a descrever os acontecimentos que outrora marcavam uma era conturbada pela crise política. Com base, principalmente, nos estudos de Candido (2000,2006) e Borges (2010) acerca de literatura, história e sociedade e nas reflexões de Angelo (1994) e Brandão (1994), no que se refere à ditadura e à repressão, e nos estudos de Pageaux e Machado (1988) e Pageaux (2011) acerca da imagologia como teoria principal de análise, esta pesquisa faz uma análise literária e comparativa das obras Pessach: a travessia, de Carlos Heitor Cony, publicada em 1967, antes do Ato Institucional Nº 5 (AI5); e A festa: Romance: Contos, de Ivan Angelo, publicada em 1976 após o referido Ato. Usaremos também as contribuições de Orlandi (2007) e Foucault (2014) para tecer reflexões acerca das práticas de silenciamento e silêncio por meio do discurso, nesse caso, o literário, para analisarmos as imagens construídas a partir do discurso de resistência. O objetivo desta pesquisa é (des)velar as imagens construídas da ditadura militar impregnadas nos discursos críticos dos narradores-personagens das obras supracitadas e verificar que imagens são construídas nas estratégias utilizadas pelos autores, através das personagens criadas e das estruturas narrativas, para descrever o momento social e político pelo qual perpassava a população brasileira e a classe artística da época, especialmente a dos escritores. Verifica-se que nos dois romances há uma grande carga de criticidade ao regime da época, mas também uma divergência na focalização discursiva dos narradores e, portanto, uma mudança quanto à imagem desse regime apresentada aos leitores
