Castilian, catalan, galician languages: Hopkins symptoms checklist in 25 items translations. Control cultural check

Depression, the second most common chronic disorder in primary care, is a complex pathology with many symptoms. Family Practice Depression Multimorbidity (FPDM) study designated Hopkins Symptoms Check List-25 (HSCL-25) as the best tool to diagnose depression. In order, to have the same reliable tool in Europe, a translation of the scale has been made in each European country who was taking part in the study. With a backward-forward Delphi procedure translation, HSCL-25 was translated in Castilian, Catalan and Galician. To keep a relaible meaning, a linguistic translation is not enough. The aim of this study was to make a cultural check to verify the translations, ensuring that the meaning of the Castilian, Catalan and Galician version remains faithful to the original English version. Methods : a control cultural check has been realized by a consensus group with international experts and official traductors. Results : we have noticed some back translation trouble, and cultural effect, but translations remain faithful and display the same meaning that in English form.Discussion : the differences noticed are due to the language itself. There is, for example, English expressions like "Feeling blue" which doesn’t exist in Spanish languages. However, the Spanish adapatations in translations do not change the original meaning. The Castilian, Catalan and Galician translations are linguistically and culturally faithful to the original English version of HSCL-25. No bias is found in the study.Conclusion : Castilian, Catalan and Galician translations are ready to be employed to diagnose depression in this country. The next step is to test those versions with a sample of native population in primary care.La dépression, pathologie complexe combinant plusieurs symptômes, est la deuxième maladie chronique soignée en soins primaires. Family Practice Depression Multimorbidity (FPDM) avait désigné l’Hopkins Symptoms Check List-25 (HSCL-25) comme le meilleur outil diagnostique. Cette échelle a été traduite dans tous les pays participant à l’étude FPDM dans le but d’avoir un outil commun. Une procédure Delphi et une traduction aller-retour ont été réalisées en Castillan, Catalan et Galicien. Une traduction linguistique n’est pas suffisante pour avoir le même sens. Le but de cette étude était de réaliser un contrôle culturel pour s’assurer que les traductions de chaque pays étaient fidèles à l’échelle anglaise initiale et conservaient le concept évoqué. Matériel et Méthodes : un groupe d’experts internationaux accompagnés de traducteurs officiels de la langue ont réalisé un contrôle culturel des traductions. Résultats : nous avons pu noter des changements de traduction retour et des effets culturels, mais le sens ne changeait pas de la signification originale.Discussion : les différences observées étaient dues à la langue. Il y a, par exemple, des expressions anglaises comme « Feeling blue » qui n’existe pas dans les langues espagnoles. Cependant, les adaptations espagnols dans les traductions ne changent pas le sens premier. Les traductions castillanes, catalanes et galiciennes sont linguistiquement et culturellement fidèle à la version originale anglaise de l’échelle HSCL-25. Aucun biais n’est retrouvé dans l’étude. Conclusion : les traductions castillane, catalane et galicienne sont finalisées et prêtes à être employées dans les pays d’origine. La prochaine étape est de valider les échelles en population native en pratique ambulatoire
