International audienceThis article pertains to an open debate, started in October 2017 in this review and concerning our modern understanding of ancient citizenship as well as the place held by free women, as legitimate members of the civic community, within the social apparatus. The argument aims to underline a modern paradox: that our scholarship factors in, on the one hand, the existence of an ancient lexicon for women citizens and of an emic conception of citizenship-which certainly bears few resemblances to our own-and, on the other, a treatment of individuals based on gender distinction and in the name of a supposed obvious masculine domination that is never challenged.
