Faults in the Earth crust are localized zones of deformation which can drive fluids over long distances. Estimating the permeability of fault zones and their hydro-mechanical properties is crucial in a wide range of fields of research and industrial applications. In the petroleum industry, and more specifically in exploration and production applications, the seal integrity of faults in low permeability formations (e.g. shale) needs to be evaluated for the detection of hydrocarbon traps.
