La réalisation des remerciements dans les Manières de langage

International audienceWhile they were studied for a long time thanks to their historic contribution in lexicology, and diachronic phonology, the Manières de langage can also teach us new perspectives in historical pragmatics. Those conversational guides that were written to teach French in England in the 15th century, are made of dialogues which present speakers in daily situations. They propose several kinds of speaker’s and addressee’s attitude according to the context and to the socio-economical background. The speech acts of thankgiving are accomplished through diverse linguistic actualizations according to the interactions between speakers : Thanksgiving depends on a strict social hierarchy and almost always goes from the inferior speaker to the superior one. The materiel or verbal acts that generate a thanks are classified in a typology. The realization of those speech acts shows some general rules : On the one hand, their wording are made around the substantive « merci » or the verb « mercier » in syntactical constructs that are not yet grammaticalized. On the other hand, they are made through whishes which mix thanking and greeting. We also take into consideration the verbal reaction of the thanked person. Moreover, we compare the thanksgiving of the Manières de langage with French romances of the same period, courteous or popular, like the Roman of Perceforest, the prosa Roman d’Erec or the Fabliaux.Longtemps étudiées pour leur apport en lexicologie, en phonologie ou en histoire de la langue, les Manières de langage peuvent aussi faire évoluer notre approche en pragmatique. Ces manuels de conversation, destinés à l’enseignement du français en Angleterre au XVe siècle, sont composés de dialogues mettant en scène des locuteurs dans des situations de la vie quotidienne. Proposant différents types d’approche de l’allocutaire selon le contexte et la situation socio-économique de l’interaction, ils représentent non seulement des phrases, mais aussi des attitudes communicatives. Ainsi l’observation des actes de langage de remerciements permet de montrer leurs réalisations linguistiques selon les relations interpersonnelles des interlocuteurs : on constate que la réalisation du remerciement est strictement hiérarchisée et est dirigée quasi exclusivement du locuteur en situation d’infériorité à un allocutaire en situation de supériorité. Sans que l’on puisse en tirer des conclusions définitives, on établit une typologie des actes matériels ou verbaux qui entrainent le remerciement. Enfin, on analyse la réalisation des remerciements : elle repose d’une part sur des constructions autour du nom merci ou du verbe mercier dans des constructions syntaxiques qui ne semblent pas encore grammaticalisées. D’autre part, elle est réalisée par des formulations votives aux implications religieuses qui mêlent étroitement remerciement et salutations de départ. La réaction verbale du « remercié » est aussi prise en compte.On compare par ailleurs la réalisation des remerciements dans les Manières avec des exemples tirés de textes littéraires, continentaux, qualifiés de courtois ou de populaires à peu près de la même époque, comme le Roman de Perceforest, le Roman d’Erec en prose ou les fabliaux
