A new experimental device makes it possible to easily visualize, in tip-plane geometry under a voltage window, the "streamers" that generally precede the breakdown. For very many liquids, there is a close relationship between the shape of the streamer, its speed of propagation, the currents and the light emitted whatever the polarity. The speeds increase by addition of electron-sensing compounds or low ionization potential.For high voltage ramp pressures and slopes, the harmonic generation fields of the streamers are sufficient to produce a field emission or ionization.It is shown that gaseous processes occur in both polarities.
