International audienceThis paper explores the notions of rebellion and revolution in relation with the Thirteen Colonies and Scotland from the Stamp Act crisis (1765-66) to the death of George Washington (1799).The colonists were described as rebels in a number of Scottish sources due to their refusal to be taxed by Parliament. However they strongly opposed the label for, until 1775, they conceived their resistance as part of a common project with the English radicals to save the constitution from a tyrannical government. Conversely, they associated the word rebellion with the Scots and the Jacobites, with whom they resented being compared.
