Eco friendly behaviors change behaviors via technology

International audienceWe are all aware of the impact of our behaviors on the environment : recycling, turning off electronic devices when not in use or having a shorter shower. But knowing it, does it involve the change of our acts ? The answer is no : the current climatic context is a first proof. Furthermore, the social psychology studies show that the knowledge is not sufficient to lead behaviors relating to them (cf. Peterson, Kealey, Mann, Marek & Sarason, 2000 ; Albarracin, Durantini & Earl, 2006). It means that people can be supportive and have knowledge about pro-environmental behaviors without applying it. It’s typically « do as I say, not as I do ».The field of social psychology is interested in factors that may influence people. Persuasion is especially part of this discipline. Since its beginnings, persuasion has evolved. Indeed, early studies (Hovland, Janis & Kelley, 1953) assumed that the exposure of an individual to a stimulus (the message containing an argument favorable to an attitude object) led to the change of attitude, and thus, the associated behavioral changes to them. In other words, many variables take action as knowledge of the person, cognitive responses developed (Greenwald, 1968) or the type of information processing used (Petty & Cacioppo, 1986) etc.For a while, many experimental approaches were carried out face-to-face, but emerging technologies have been identified as tools that are conducive to persuasion regarding their massive use. Indeed, the microcomputer’s evolution led the population to the daily use of numerous and different tasks (Dascal, 2005).
