50 ans de Beatles studies

International audienceThis article reviews half a century of Beatles studies, the history of which is examined here in the light of the academic research carried out on popular music since the 1960s. While focusing on the Fab Four’s contribution to legitimize this field of study, the author investigates the musicological bias that was long characteristic of research on the band, and the way it influenced the development of popular music studies in the United States, the United Kingdom, continental Europe and Scandinavia.Cet article revient sur un demi-siècle de Beatles studies, dont l’histoire est ici envisagée à la lumière de l’essor de l’étude universitaire des musiques populaires depuis les années 1960. Tout en insistant sur la contribution des Fab Four à la légitimation de ce champ de recherche, l’auteur s’interroge sur le biais musicologique qui a longtemps caractérisé les travaux sur le groupe et sur la façon dont il a influencé le développement des popular music studies aux États-Unis, au Royaume-Uni, en Europe continentale et en Scandinavie
